What is the difference between PFA and PTFE?
At Altaflo, we produce high performance fluoropolymer and fluoroplastic tubing and pipe.
Made with 100% virgin grade high performance resins, our products provide the best physical properties for your application. Two of our most useful products, PTFE and PFA , have a wide range of uses. But, do you know the difference between the two materials? Read on to find out what these materials can be used for, and how they differ from each other.
What is PTFE?
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is the most flexible fluoroplastic available. It also has the broadest temperature range of any material of its kind and can resist highly corrosive liquids and gases even at elevated temperatures. PTFE was the original Teflon material ever developed. PTFE won’t melt when it is heated, which means it can be quite difficult to process. Very specialized techniques are required to work with this material.
At Altaflo, we offer Altafluor 100 PTFE tubing. To find out about the specifications we offer, have a look at the PTFE tubing page.
What is PFA?
Perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) was developed as a version of FEP (which has many similar properties to PTFE) with a higher temperature resistance. It is suitable for a wide range of very demanding applications, thanks to its extreme chemical resistance.
At Altaflo, we offer Altafluor 400 PFA tubing and pipe. To find out more about its features and specifications, have a look PFA tubing page.
What’s the difference?
The main difference between these types of fluoropolymer is in the structure of the materials. PFA comprises a polymer that has the ability to be melt-processed — a structural difference that gives PFA improved flow, thermal stability and creek resistance.
PTFE was the first synthetic fluoropolymer of its kind to be produced and is widely known by the brand name Teflon. First produced in the fifties, PTFE was discovered to be non-stick. It also has a high electro negativity. FEP, on the other hand, is softer than PTFE. For this reason, it melts at a lower temperature than PTFE.
Besides PTFE and PFA, we carry a broad range of other products. These include FEP; UHP PFA; PVDF; THV; PVDF FLEX; THV FLEX; MFA; THVP; ETFE; and ECTFE materials. For a full list of the products on offer at Altaflo, read more here. We produce innovative and high-performance tubing and pipe suitable for use in a wide variety of industries and applications. We are able to produce custom items from these and other fluoropolymer and fluoroplastic resins to meet your requirements, so get in touch if you need something specially made. We pride ourselves on our ISO 9001:2015 certification, which officially recognizes our adherence to upholding the very highest international standards, so you can rest assured that you’ll receive only the best products when you make an order.
